I recently came across copies of the original drawings that I made in preparation for painting the North Queensland palms. I strongly believe that good drawing is the foundation of a good painting, and for me a detailed drawing is an opportunity to work out where everything will be in the final painting.

Inevitably, changes are made in the final process - details edited or faded out, as paint replaces pencil. You can see this by comparing the drawing on the right with the painting of Livistona australis (click here). Apart from anything else, I love the act of drawing itself!
