Many people are amazed to hear that new species of plants are still being described to science. In fact, illustrating these new species is the main type of work that I do. Madagascar is one of the areas where Kew botanists work hardest, collecting specimens from the rich diversity of its forests. In the past two years alone, I have illustrated about 20 species of palms new to science, and am currently illustrating one very rare and 6 news species of grass - all from Madagascar. The image on the right shows a collection of Lecomtella madagascarensis, a grass, (pressed) which I am drawing using the microscope and camera lucida.
