BOTANICAL PEN AND INK: BEGINNERS

Monday 11th - Wednesday 13th November 2024 (3 days)

Pen and ink botanical illustrations play an important role in depicting plants for science and publications.

With pen and ink, we can produce strong, clear illustrations which are easily understood, reproduced and printed.

Using simple leaves and flowers as subjects, we will cover:

  • to to prepare accurate line drawings to scale, for ink work

  • pen and ink techniques: line drawing

  • pen and ink techniques: how to show tonal values and form using different marks

  • materials: which pens and paper to use, and why

ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS, KEW (NEXT UP)

BOTANICAL PEN AND INK: INTERMEDIATE

Monday 18th - Wednesday 20th November 2024 (3 days)

In this course we will explore further the techniques of pen and ink for botanical illustration.

Students will be given a more complex subject to draw first in pencil and the completing it in pen and ink, considering:

  • how to prepare a measured drawing to scale

  • inking in: the appropriate use of varying line weights to show form and enhance clarity of detail

  • choosing the right tonal marks to show form and detail

We will also touch briefly on:

  • enlarging parts such as flowers

  • composition for pen and ink illustrations

PLEASE NOTE: if you missed out on a place on the Beginner’s course, you may by able to attend this course depending on your previous experience.

sukha swiss alps retreat

Sunday 29th June - Saturday 5th July

A week-long stay at the beautiful Sukha Yoga Retreats centre in the Swiss Alps.

We will work both in the field and in the studio, drawing and painting plants from the summer alpine fields and from the La Thomasia Alpine Botanical Garden. Learn how to:

  • Observe and understand plant structures, and capture them in our drawings

  • Create accurate pencil drawings of plants

  • Colour mixing and matching, and the addition of watercolour to pencil sketchbook studies

  • Draw plants both in the studio and in the field; including dealing with the challenge of working from protected material

  • Take good photos for secondary reference and back-up information

    Participants will be shown different types of sketchbook study and can choose to focus on one type or try several, including: detailed botanical study of one or more plants; and capturing a time and place using multiple plants and landscape vignettes.
