BOTANICAL WATERCOLOUR (INTERMEDIATE)
Monday 17th - Wednesday 19th February 2025
In this course we will explore further the techniques of watercolour painting for botanical art and illustration.
Students will be given a more complex subject to paint in watercolour, learning:
the preliminary work of observing, matching and mixing the colour of plant subjects
choosing the appropriate technique for the subject, including washes, wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques
building up watercolour slowly and carefully to achieve depth of colour and detail
PLEASE NOTE: if you missed out on a place on the Beginner’s (Fundamentals) course, you may by able to attend this course depending on your previous experience.

FUNDAMENTALS OF BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION *SORRY, FULLY BOOKED*
Monday 24th - Friday 28th February 2025 (5 days)
Held in person at Museum No. 1, Kew, opposite the Palm House.
This ever-popular course provides an excellent introduction to the materials and techniques used in botanical art and illustration. It is perfect for beginners wishing to discover the approaches and techniques of botanical illustration; those needing a refresh, or simply some in-person support on their botanical art/illustration journey.
Over five days, we will cover:
how to observe plants for art and illustration
materials and equipment
observational drawing techniques
watercolour techniques for depicting plants
While you are welcome to bring all your own materials, a selection of watercolour paints will be provided. You need only bring paper, paintbrushes and pencils.
The focus of days 1 and 2 is drawing, days 3 to 5 on watercolour techniques (effectively beginners’ level botanical watercolour).
sukha swiss alps retreat - RESIDENTIAL COURSE

Sunday 29th June - Saturday 5th July 2025
A week-long stay at the beautiful Sukha Yoga Retreats centre in the stunning environment of the Swiss Alps!
We will work both in the field and in the studio, drawing and painting plants from the summer alpine fields and from the La Thomasia Alpine Botanical Garden. Learn how to:
Observe and understand plant structures, and capture them in our drawings
Create accurate pencil drawings of plants
Colour mixing and matching, and the addition of watercolour to pencil sketchbook studies
Draw plants both in the studio and in the field; including dealing with the challenge of working from protected material
Take good photos for secondary reference and back-up information
Participants will be shown different types of sketchbook study and can choose to focus on one type or try several, including: detailed botanical study of one or more plants; and capturing a time and place using multiple plants and landscape vignettes.
